"We met the President!"

“We met the president” echoed throughout two school buses that had taken 40 band students to play at Jenna Bush’s and Henry Hager’s wedding rehearsal, Friday night, in Salado.  The band added to the party when they played “Happy Birthday” to Henry after the rehearsal dinner.  The wedding party followed the band while it played cadences throughout the streets of Salado to meet up with the rest of their party at the Silver Spur Theater.  The band played their cadences, the Texas Fight Song, " Eye of the Tiger," and “Time Lords” while the president danced and the first lady watched.  President Bush and family met with the band students and thanked them for “making his little girls’ weekend even more special.”

Absolutely Incredible Kids

1

Two Belton students were honored at the Absolutely Incredible Kid Celebration on Thursday, April 3, at the Bell County Expo Center.  K. Holbert and E. Sievers were nominated by one of their teachers who saw how incredible these two students are.  Holbert was nominated because of his generosity. He once learned that his dance instructor worked through the dinner hour teaching classes and used his own money to have dinner delivered to her from a local steakhouse.  He often puts other’s needs before his own and has logged over 100 volunteer hours with the Aware Central Texas (ACT) program. Sievers was nominated because of her organization and participation in the Relay for Life to honor science teacher Betty Higdon who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma.  Sievers is an officer in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Health Occupations Students of America, and the Frisbee Club. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.  Sievers also takes time to volunteer and lead devotionals at her local church.

AP History Trip

On January 31 the AP U.S. History classes were invited to attend the “They Had a Dream Too” presentation at the state Capitol.  The event was hosted by the Texas Young Lawyers Association in order to promote student involvement in societal issues by sharing the stories of young people from the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.  The students watched the award winning They Had a Dream Too video and heard several speakers.  Justice Caroline Wright told stories of growing up in segregated America and how her mother tried to protect her and her sister from the evils of racism.  Norma Cantu is a professor of law at the University of Texas.  She graduated from Harvard Law School at the age of 22 and has spent her career defending the rights of minorities.  James Laney is a former Texas Speaker of the House.  He encouraged the students to use the power of the vote to make a difference in society.  The students were also treated to a tour of the Capitol before heading back to Belton.  Overall, it was an inspirational day that gave the students a unique insight to the Civil Rights Movement, and how they can make a difference today!

GT Lunch Brunch

Gifted and Talented students at Belton High School have recently enjoyed engaging in a discussion of the “great ideas” of civilization as proposed by Dr. Mortimer Adler in his renowned work, The Great Ideas. This discussion is the first in a series of sessions of the newly created GT Lunch Bunch, a program designed to give GT students a chance to interact in a purely GT setting. The GT students were treated to pizza while they discussed their choices for the six “great ideas” in small and whole group settings. Their choices were eventually compared to the six great ideas Dr. Adler identified in his book. This first session focused on the student’s ability to evaluate and make decisions about the ideas they feel are most important to their world view. The session was planned and conducted by Jan Ward, AP English 4 teacher, and Ed Braeuer, AP Physics C teacher, along with input and assistance from Instructional Facilitators Peggy Hughes and Marlena Kjelland.
