School Nurse
The following are some general medication and immunization guidelines for students. Additional information can also be found on the BISD Health Services page. Medication:All prescribed medications to be given at school requires a current written order from the child’s physician. “Over-the-Counter” medicines such as- Benadryl, Tylenol, Advil, etc. will need a parent permission form completed in order for medication to be given.Allasthma inhalers must be kept in the nurse’s office unless the doctor has written a specific order for the student to carry it while at school. Immunizations:By the time of each student’s 12th birthday, they will need to have had the following vaccinations: (1)Hepatitis B – this is a series of 3 separate shots that take a minimum of 6 months to complete. (2) MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)-Requirement is 2 doses. (3)Varicella (chickpox) – if your child has already had the chicken pox, a letter from the parent or physician with the approximate date of the disease can be a substitution for the immunization. If the student is entering into the 7th grade and has not had the Chicken Pox (2) doses of Varicella is required. (4) DPT-Students 7 years and older are required to have at least 3 doses with one dose on or after the 4th birthday. A booster is required every 10 years. (5) Tdap—Is a requirement for 7th graders, if at least five years have passed since the last dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine. If five years have not elapsed since the last dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine at the entry into the 7th grade, then this dose will become due as soon as the five-year interval has passed. (6) Meningococcal-Requirement is 1 dose for the 7th grade. (7) Polio-Requirement is 4 doses with 1 on or after the 4th birthday OR 3 doses if the 3rd dose was on or after the 4th birthday OR combination of 4 OPV and IPV received before 4th birthday. (8) TB skin test-Required for all students entering from a foreign country or if they have been out of the country for 28 days or longer. These immunizations are available from your own physician or at the Bell County Health Department in Temple every Wednesday and Killeen every Monday. Special Needs:Any specific needs of a student will require a current note from the student’s physician.This includes things such as PE restrictions, any specific health conditions that may require special adaptations for your child, and substitution of juice for milk allergies (this is required by the food service department). Screenings:All 7th grade students will be tested for vision and hearing.The 8th grade students will have a spinal screening done to check for scoliosis.The parents will be notified of any problems. New students who are entering from outside the BISD will also be screened.
