 PRE-KINDERGARTEN

Pre-Kindergarten is provided for children who are four on September 1 of that school year and qualify for free or reduced lunch or have English as their second language.  It is a child’s first opportunity to attend school and so we try to make it fun and packed full of exciting learning experiences.  We introduce and help children begin to understand basic concepts. Our teaching is hands-on learning.  Children spend instructional time in large group, small group, centers and one on one.

In Pre-K we learn colors, numbers, shapes, letter recognition, and letter sounds.  We also introduce rhyming, alliteration, sequencing, story retell, and many other skills.

Children learn through creative exploration in centers such as:  abc, art, books, blocks, dramatic play, math, sand, science, and writing.

One of our main goals is to help start each child successfully in their school career.  We hope we are able to spark a love for learning that will last their whole life!

Kindergarten at Leon Heights is an exciting place!

Every day is a great and new adventure!

We put a major focus on learning our letter names and sounds. In addition to our list of 40 sight words, we learn how to put letters together to make words. We are reading in kindergarten! Language Arts is not the only subject we focus on. We extend our curriculum into math, science, social studies, music, P.E., and this year we even get to go to art classes!  Learning at Leon Heights is creative and stimulating. Our job in kindergarten is to instill that feeling of desire to always want to be a life-long learner.

Every month we spotlight a new life-skill to study and have a daily discussion or role-play activity to teach us how to handle our emotions, friends, and difficult situations.

Kindergarten has a service project that we like to extend to the whole community.  We collect pop tabs to send to the Ronald McDonald House. They, in turn, sell them for profit to use with their patients.  Last year we collected 45 gallons!

Come join the fun in Kindergarten!!
