Second Grade

Hi! My name is Jennifer Bishop and I am a second grade teacher at Leon Heights.  This will be my first year teaching second grade and I am very excited.  I grew up in Belton, actually attended Lakewood Elementary and later graduated from Belton High School.  I went on to play softball at St. Edward's University where I graduated in 2007 with a degree in Kinesiology.  I am engaged to be married over Christmas break on Jan. 3, 2009 to my fiance, Jason Hoelscher.

Second grade at Leon Heights is a big year of extension and growth from the foundation classes of kindergarten and first grade.  The teachers see students blossom into wonderful learners who have had a strong prior background of basic knowledge and skills.  The second grade teachers are eager to provide a positive learning environment that creates successful, life-long learners.  We feel that teachers, parents and students are the team that can help make this possible.

Many points of learning take place in second grade.  In reading, students are still learning to read, however greater comprehension and fluency is the main goal.  We want to shift students from the continued “learning to read” at the beginning of the year to “reading to learn” by the end.  In math, the main topics of learning are telling time, counting coins to a dollar, and two-digit addition/subtraction.  Social studies and science curriculum focuses on many hands-on learning experiences.  Science has opportunities to enhance the areas of life/earth science and the human body.  Social studies allows students to learn about citizenship in their personal lives, community and world. This is certainly not all of what second grade has in store for your child however it is a highlight of what can be expected throughout the year.  We are excited to have your child in second grade at Leon Heights.  It will be a fun and exciting year.
