TLots of WONDERFUL things happen in Third Grade at Leon Heights and the teachers are always excited to watch the change and growth your child will experience this year.  This year, your child will take the TAKS test in Math and Reading.   Your child will be required to pass the Reading portion of TAKS in order to be promoted to fourth grade.  Each student will have three opportunities to do this. The Third Grade teachers look forward to providing your child with a learning environment that will be exciting and challenging.  Our goal is that your child becomes an independent, successful, life-long learner, and we look forward to working together to make this a wonderful school year.Third Graders will complete literature studies, story maps, character analysis, and writing assignments using the 6 + 1 traits of writing. Third Graders will explore all areas of math with the use of manipulative's.  Your child will learn problem solving, multiplication, division, patterns, graphs, and real world math applications. The Third Grade Science curriculum includes Life Science, Earth and Space Science. In Third Grade Social Studies your child will explore community, its people and government.   There is also a strong emphasis on developing citizenship skills. The ability to learn academic skills and become a successful learner needs to be supported by strong Life Skills. This year, our school counselor will teach a Life Skills unit. Third grade is a year of intense learning.  Students will gain a tremendous amount of knowledge, but will improve in leadership and accept responsibility for their own actions.  Students will demonstrate responsibility by following classroom and school rules.  Third Grade students will be asked to demonstrate a sense of thoughtfulness and consideration toward others.   This may be accomplished in part by working cooperatively in a group, following teacher directions and practicing good health habits.  Your child will have a busy, exciting year in Third Grade at Leon Heights.
