Big things are happening in First Grade at Pirtle Elementary. The First Grade teachers are looking foward to watching your child grow and learn in an environment which is nurturing and challenging.

First Graders will be exploring many different subject areas. Our main emphasis will be reading. Your child will learn to incorporate phonicsskills, reading strategies and sight words in order to read with fluency and understanding. This will be guided reading groups, and work stations with word building practice.

First Grade students will participate in Writer's Workshop where they will learn different aspects of writing and put it into practice. Each student will be writing daily.

Students will learn to explore all areas of Math the use of manipulatives. They will learn to write, count, and compare numbers, and solve addition and subtraction facts. Students will also learn to tell time, read graphs, measure, and determine patterns in their enviroment.

The First Grade curriculum also includes Life Science, Earth and Space, and Science in Society. Students will also develop citizenship skills during our focus in Social Studies.

Social Skills will be practiced and developed during the year as students learn how to work cooperatively with others in large and small groups. They will practice expressing themsevles in appropriate manners while practicing speaking and listening skills. Students will also learn to follow directions and be active learners. The First Grade teachers look foward to a very busy, productive year here at Joe M. Pirtle Elementary.
