Academics : Fourth Grade

4th Grade Reading/Language Arts: The block is taught in a balanced literacy format.  The classes include a Word Study time where teachers focus on spelling and a wide range of language activities.  Another component of this framework is Reading Workshop.  During this time, students are taught reading skills or information from the Social Studies’ content area and are given time to work and read independently.  The last component of our block is Writing Workshop.  This is the time when students are taught writing lessons and given time to practice and share their work.  Our focus this year is on sharing our thoughts both through discussion and writing.  This will hopefully instill in our students a positive attitude toward both literacy and learning.Homework includes reading each night and studying spelling words.  Extra practice for skills may be sent home, as needed.  Points will be deducted from late work and zeroes will be given for assignments not turned in at all.  Fourth graders are required to take the Reading and Writing TAKS tests this year.

Science:  The topics covered this year are in the fields of Life Science, Physical Science, or Earth Science.  Students will participate in various lab experiments.  Usually there is no science homework given unless, students have been absent and need to do make-up work.  Everything we do this year will help prepare them for the 5th grade Science TAKS test.

Math:  In fourth grade we practice basic math skills, higher order thinking skills, and doing problem solving.  These skills prepare them for life, and are building a foundation for the next grade level.  They should be practicing at home every day on the multiplication facts.  This is vital for future learning in division, fractions, and measurement.  Check their planner for Math homework assignments.  Points will be taken off for late work.  Homework not turned in the week it is due will be given a 0.
