Belton High School UIL Academic Team Takes 1st Place At District

Belton High School UIL Academic Team took first place in the district tournament last week. Students from both Belton New Tech and Belton High competed in events, including speech and debate, one act play, and academic teams. Highlights beyond the really big win included Kadyn Utley with a personal best in accounting, only missing three questions. His individual score was almost as high as the second place, overall team score.  Ruopu Jaio made a perfect score of 20 of 20 in Physics, which hadn't been done by a student at Belton for the last 14 years.

Leighton Haglund is going to compete at Regionals for the third year in a row for Computer Science.  Journalism placed in the top three in all four of the events. The top two students in Math tied for first, which is very rare, and both were from Belton! Maia Borchardt from Belton New Tech and Katheryn Shelburne from Belton High are headed to Regionals for Spelling.  Maia is our first New Tech student to go to the Regional competition in academics.
In total, the students medaled 89 times, which spanned every event at district competition and over 20 students have qualified for Regionals in Arlington, April 7-8. In total, Belton ISD students medaled 89 times!  Every coach and student worked hard to overcome an insurmountable hill in getting to the top. Congratulations!
