Counseling and Guidance Program

Mrs. Indy Nesby, Counselor

254-215-3606

Our mission as school counselors is to provide a comprehensive guidance program that will assist all students, regardless of personal differences, in acquiring the skills, knowledge, and attributes needed to become effective students, responsible citizens, productive workers and lifelong learners.

Goals:

1. To teach students the skills to resolve interpersonal conflicts in a non-violent way.

2. To teach students to appreciate their own uniqueness.

3. To teach students how to set realistic goals.

4. To teach students to recognize the relationship between academic education and the world of work.

5. To assist faculty, parents, and students as a team effort in exploring resources and planning strategies to maximize student success.

Confidentiality:

Confidentially is a critical part of a counselor’s principles. When a student, parent, or teacher visits the counselor’s office, the general rule is that what is said in there stays in there. However, there are some exceptions. These include four basic areas: suicidal thoughts, homicidal thoughts (threats), possible abuse, and possession or use of weapons or illegal substances. With any of these topics, the appropriate personnel will be notified.

There may be situations where the counselor indicates to faculty that confidential issues discussed may affect learning or school behavior. When the issue must remain confidential, the counselor will share as much as possible and work with faculty to assist the student through this difficult time.

Referrals:

Students may be referred to the counselor by a staff member, parent, or the student themselves. Counseling referral forms are available in each classroom, from the office or from the counselor. You are welcome to talk to the counselor about a student you want to refer for counseling (254-215-3606).

Once a referral is made, the counselor will take the appropriate steps to assist with the situation, such as: parent contact, individual counseling, group counseling, conference with teacher, conference with administrator, or referral to outside agency.
