Dear Sparta Parents/Guardians: We are so excited about our new batch of third graders! Meet the Teacher night went very well and we had a great turn out. Thank you so much for coming out and visiting with us. We would like to share some important information and expectations about third grade. Our grade level is divided into three teams. Third Grade Teachers: Tab Lloyd-Language Arts/Social Studies (Teams with Shaney Shaffer) Shaney Shaffer-Math/Science (Teams with Tab Lloyd) Laura Carroll-Language Arts/Social Studies part-time (Teams with Annette Sims) Annette Sims-Math/Science (Teams with Laura Carroll and Kelly Rhodes) Kelly Rhodes-Language Arts/Social Studies part-time (Teams with Annette Sims) Linda Miller- All subjects-self contained Classroom Contract Very soon you will see a classroom contract in your child’s take-home folder. This will include the guidelines, consequences, and rewards for your child in third grade. Please be watching for this. By signing the contract, your child agrees to follow our classroom procedures and guidelines. Planners and Take-Home Folders In third grade, all students are expected to keep a planner and a take-home folder, and keep it updated daily. The planners, which Sparta will provide, are to be utilized for homework assignments, weekly spelling words, and notes about your child’s day. We ask that you initial each night in order to maintain an open line of communication between the parent and teacher regarding your child’s progress in school. If the planner is lost, you will need to replace this for your child. Planners cost $4.00 to replace. The take-home folder is also used in third grade. Please ask your child to show you their take-home folder each night. This folder will be taken home each night and returned to school the next day. The left hand pocket is for the things that can be left at home and the right hand pocket is for things that need to be sent right back to school. Please help your child by assisting them in cleaning this out weekly in order for them to stay organized. Monday Memo Each Monday you will see a Weekly Newsletter in your child’s take-home folder. This newsletter will inform you about the objectives your child is learning throughout the week in all subject areas, projects and research assignments, as well as providing important information regarding special events, important dates, etc. going on at Sparta. D-Hall In third grade, we do have d-hall during recess for students who forgot their homework, need to finish class work, or have received two write-ups in one day due to behavior. During this time, if your child is in d-hall for behavior or late homework, he/she will be asked to write a letter explaining what they did wrong and what they will do to make a better choice next time. Students WILL NOT write a letter if they’re in d-hall to finish class work assigned that day. The d-hall letters will go home daily and need to be signed and returned to school in an effort to maintain parent-teacher communication. We have very high expectations in third grade for our students and very few students end up needing d-hall. Homework Homework is expected to be turned in on the date it is due. Each day your child’s work does not get turned in results in a 10 point deduction. In the event that your child does not turn in their homework, they will be assigned d-hall in which he/she will write a letter home explaining this consequence. The grading scale is as follows: One day late: -10 points; Two days late: -20 points; Three days late: -30 points. After three days of not turning in homework, your child will receive a zero for that assignment. If the homework is misplaced, we will be happy to provide another copy as long as we’re informed about the missing homework; this will be your child’s responsibility. Again, we are very excited for this new group of students. It is going to be a great year with everyone’s hard work and dedication. We are here because we love kids, and we are also here to help you help your child. If you are unsure about anything, please feel free to contact us. We want to make this a successful and memorable year for your child.
