Screening Guidelines
As a required state law, the following health appraisals will be conducted on students of BISD.
Vision & Hearing
Vision and hearing screenings will be conducted on all students in grades Pre-K, K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th as well as all students who are new students up to grade 9. Students, parents, and teachers may request screening anytime during the school year. If problems are found, a parent/guardian will be notified by letter/email and/or phone. Spinal Screening
In compliance with Health and Safety Code, Chapter 37, all children shall undergo screening for abnormal spinal curvature in accordnace with the following schedule.
- Girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 ( or fall semester of grade 5) and again at age 12 ( or fall semester of grade 7).
- Boys will be sceened one time at age 13 or 14 ( or fall semester of grade 8).

Spinal Screening Exemption
Parents will receive a letter and/or email from the school nurse the week before spinal screenings will be conducted. If you prefer to have your child’s spinal screening conducted by their primary care provider, you will need to contact the school nurse by email or letter before the screenings begin, and then provide the results of the screening to the school nurse before the end of the fall semester of this school year.
If you do not wish to have your child screened for religious reasons, you must contact your school nurse by letter or email before the screenings begin and then submit an exemption form to the school no later than the end of the fall semester of this school year.
