BISD CTE Students Work Together on FCCLA Reading Project
In an effort to encourage children to read more, Belton ISD Career & Technical Education students in FCCLA and construction trades are working together to bring custom built lending library houses to elementary school campuses in the district.
FCCLA students Yesenia Guzman and Alexis Aryal, both juniors at Belton High School, got the idea for these lending library houses as they worked together as members of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Seen in communities across the country, these lending libraries houses encourage reading with the idea that anyone can take a book and/or share a book with others.
Guzman and Aryal first visited with their FCCLA sponsor Milissa Beechem and then shared their ideas with construction teacher Craig Sullivan. From there, Guzman and Aryal partnered with construction students Nalen Newton and Kievan Menapace to build the houses with wood donated last year by Butler Weldments. After the houses are completed, Guzman and Aryal paint them and coordinate their installation at elementary campuses in the district.
“We want to promote a love of reading while providing an opportunity to put books in the hands of children,” said Guzman. “Reading is a fundamental skill that everyone needs.”
“This is also a good opportunity for us to get more involved with the community,” said Guzman. “We hope the students will talk about it and then we will look at expanding it into the community.”
Six houses are currently in production, with the first two being installed at Sparta Elementary and Southwest Elementary this week.
“Encouraging and developing a love of reading in elementary students is so important,” described Sparta Elementary Principal Julee Manley. “It is exciting to see our own high school students recognize and take the initiative to address reading in such a fun and exciting way.”
Guzman and Aryal are documenting the project and will take it to FCCLA competition this spring. They are now accepting donations of children’s books at Belton High School to put in the houses.
