Belton ISD Inspires Student Success with Two-Way Dual Language Programs

In an ongoing effort to empower every student for a successful, multicultural future, Belton Independent School District proudly offers comprehensive dual language immersion programs. These programs begin in elementary school, and provide bilingual, biliterate education designed to prepare students for multilingual academic success.

What makes Belton ISD’s offerings unique is the availability of two types of dual language programs: one-way and two-way, both aimed at cultivating full proficiency in another language in addition to English. The two-way option is particularly special, bringing together both English learners and English-proficient students, with instruction provided in both languages. This unique feature allows students to learn alongside peers from diverse linguistic backgrounds, fostering greater cultural and linguistic exchange. Currently, eight percent of Belton ISD’s elementary students are participating in these programs, which have expanded by two sections this year due to growing interest.

“Belton ISD’s Dual Language Immersion programs are part of the district's broader commitment to fostering biliteracy, bilingualism, and biculturalism among its students," said BISD’s Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Gabi Niño. “The programs emphasize both language development and rigorous academic instruction while also nurturing interpersonal skills, ensuring that students achieve high levels of success in both Spanish and English.”

The One-Way Dual Language program, designed for English learners, offers instruction in both English and their native language, with at least half of the lessons taught in the student's primary language. This program is available at Belton Early Childhood School, Charter Oak Elementary, Chisholm Trail Elementary, and Southwest Elementary.

The Two-Way Dual Language Immersion program, a standout feature, brings together English learners and English-proficient students. Instruction is provided in both languages, with at least half of it conducted in the non-English language. Parents have the option to enroll their students in this unique program, which is offered at Belton Early Childhood School, Charter Oak Elementary, and Chisholm Trail Elementary.

“We are proud to offer these robust bilingual programs to our students," said Veronica Champion-Lares, the district’s Dual Language Coordinator. "Our goal is to create a learning environment that not only supports academic success but also encourages cultural appreciation and proficiency in multiple languages. Belton ISD is committed to fostering academic achievement and cultural appreciation through these programs."

Belton ISD's Dual Language Immersion programs underscore the district's dedication to empowering students with the skills needed for success, promoting academic excellence, language proficiency, and cultural understanding in preparation for success in a diverse society.
