Belton High School Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists
Belton ISD is excited to announce that two Belton High School seniors have been named among the 16,000 semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing them among the nation's top academic achievers. David Shelburne and Steven Arantes have both shown outstanding dedication to their studies, leadership within the school, and a strong commitment to their communities.
Steven Arantes, son of Milton and Else Arantes of Belton, moved with his family from Goiânia, Brazil, two years ago. He participates in cross country, plays piano for the jazz band, and serves as an officer in the National Honor Society. Arantes has a strong interest in biology and plans to study pre-med, aspiring to become a general surgeon. He credits his family for their encouragement and support throughout his academic journey.
David Shelburne, son of Theresa Whittington of Belton, is an active participant in basketball, cross country, and track. He serves as the vice president of the National Honor Society and aims to study political science or history at the University of Chicago, with aspirations of becoming a lawyer. With six older siblings who have excelled academically, Shelburne shares that his parents have always fostered high expectations for academic success.
To be considered for a merit scholarship award, semifinalists must meet several requirements to progress to the finalist stage of the competition. Around 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to achieve finalist status, and about half of those finalists will receive a National Merit Scholarship, earning the prestigious title of Merit Scholar.
"We are incredibly proud of David and Steven for being named National Merit Semifinalists," said Claudia Knox, Principal of Belton High School. "Their hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence have earned them this well-deserved recognition. They not only represent the academic strength of our school but also serve as role models for their peers. We are excited to see all the great things they will accomplish in the future."
National Merit Semifinalists, Arantes and Shelburne are now eligible to compete for National Merit Scholarships, which offer significant financial support for their college education. Final notifications for national merit designations will be announced in April.
