Field Day Tradition Goes Virtual During School Closure
Field Day, a favorite elementary event in Belton ISD, is going virtual this year - and expanding to include participation from students in all grades across the district. It is planned for May 18-22.
“Our PE teachers know how important field day is to students,” said Deanna Lovesmith, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “It is one of the most memorable end-of-the-year activities. Knowing this, elementary PE teachers gathered virtually to discuss how the event could be held despite the limitations imposed by COVID-19 restrictions.”
They quickly came up with a plan and decided the theme for this year’s field day would be “Rolling With It” - a visual nod to the stockpiling of toilet paper during the pandemic.
“The ‘rolling with it’ theme encompasses what all of us - students and teachers and parents - have had to learn to do these last few weeks,” Lovesmith said.
While “rolling with it,” the PE teachers realized a benefit of holding a virtual field day - it can be all-inclusive and not limited to only elementary students.
“We are hoping that students in 6th-12th grades will reconnect with the elementary campuses and join in on the fun,” Lovesmith said. “Teachers and parents are also invited to get involved.”
Students are encouraged to form their “quaranteams” now with members of their household. They can create their own team uniforms or order a commemorative T-shirt locally from Totally Graphic or Red’s Custom Tees.
“By partnering with two local vendors, we’re able to provide different ordering and pick-up options,” Lovesmith said. “Both vendors have the same shirt for the same price. The only additional cost is for shipping your order to your home.”
T-shirts must be ordered by May 8 and will be delivered by May 15.
Throughout the week of May 18-22, elementary campuses will take turns “hosting” each day’s events and “roll out” new activities via videos on school social media channels. Participants will be encouraged to upload photos and videos demonstrating their team’s spirit and effort.
“I’m proud of the way our PE teachers have gone above and beyond to create this Field Day experience for the entire Big Red Community,” Lovesmith said. “Because of their dedication, just like any other year, we’re looking forward to the fun of Field Day as the school year winds down.”
