Trustees Approve Compensation Plan for 2020-2021 School Year

BELTON, TX Belton ISD’s Board of Trustees took steps Monday to position the district for success as demographers continue to project student growth in the coming years.

After reviewing the current compensation plan, the Board approved salary schedule adjustments that will make the district’s pay competitive with districts of comparable sizes and further invest in providing exceptional learning experiences for students.

“When we ask ourselves how we can provide the best possible experience for our students, the answer is clear — by investing in our staff,” said Superintendent Matt Smith. "We want to retain the outstanding team that we have while also attracting the highest quality candidates to serve our students in Belton ISD. In order to do so, we need to be comparable to districts in Region 12 and throughout the state."

Belton ISD currently serves more than 12,200 students with recent projections indicating continued growth.

“We’ve seen the growth coming for a while now and have been planning accordingly,” said Suzanne M. McDonald, Board president. “So despite the uncertainty associated with COVID-19, we are financially in a place where we are able to properly compensate our hardworking and committed staff members and position ourselves to attract top talent. ”

Todd Schiller, assistant superintendent for human resources, said the district recently completed a market analysis to determine how its pay scale ranked compared to similar-sized districts in Texas. From this research, Schiller found that salaries for several positions were not competitive.

“The study highlighted the fact that principals and educational aids, in particular, could make more money doing the same job for another district,” Schiller said. 

In addition to salary scale adjustments, Belton ISD employees will also see pay raises as a part of the approved $2.9 million plan. Those include:

  • Teacher pay increases range from $500-$2,175 based on years of experience.
  • 3 percent increase for paraprofessional and auxiliary employees based on the midpoint of their salary range. 
  • 2 percent increase for professional and administrative employees based on the midpoint of their salary range.

Seventy-two percent of the approved funding will impact employees working on a Belton ISD school campus. 

“I’m grateful for the Board’s leadership and support in providing these increases and adjustments so we are able to recruit and retain the best of the best in Belton ISD,” Smith said. “We are strategically working to become the best district in Texas for our students. This investment in our current and future staff is an important part of how we will get there.
