Superintendent Announces Recommendation for Lakewood Elementary Principal
Belton ISD Superintendent Dr. Susan Kincannon announced today that she will recommend Dr. Becky Musil as the next principal of Lakewood Elementary. Musil, who previously worked in the district as an Advanced Placement English teacher at Belton High School, brings close to three decades of professional experience in classroom teaching and executive leadership to the campus administrator role.
“It’s exciting to welcome such a skilled and dedicated professional back to Belton ISD,” Kincannon said. “Having already seen firsthand how Becky earns the respect and admiration of her students and colleagues alike while increasing student achievement, I know she is the right person to lead Lakewood Elementary.”
Musil is currently the Dean of Teaching & Learning at Odessa College where she has led efforts to train faculty by promoting a culture of innovative classroom practices, instructional development, and student success. All of which are skills she personally developed and practiced during her twenty years as a classroom teacher in grades 9-12.
“With her deep knowledge of curriculum and instruction and genuine enthusiasm for learning, I know Becky will effectively execute our district’s priorities and diligently support her staff as they increase academic achievement while building a strong school culture of success for our children,” added Kincannon.
“Returning to the Big Red Community feels a bit like coming home,” Musil said. “Not only did I enjoy my years at Belton High School, my husband and I have maintained professional and personal ties to Bell County as well as our home in Belton for more than 20 years”
Prior to her role at Odessa College, Musil was the Associate Director for the National Institute for Staff & Organizational Development at the University of Texas at Austin, and served in several roles at Texas State Technical College in Waco where she was the Provost from 2008 till 2013. Musil holds a doctorate in higher education administration and master’s degree in psychology from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Texas Tech University.
“I look forward to strengthening existing relationships, campus initiatives, and building on the culture of excellence that makes Lakewood the wonderful school it is. I am honored to not only serve Lakewood students, families and staff but also the larger Belton ISD community that supports the district’s mission to provide an education that challenges every student to excel,” said Musil.
Musil has been selected for this leadership role at Lakewood Elementary following the retirement of Principal Judy Schiller. Schiller, who retired after 36 years in public education, announced her decision earlier this summer.
The school board will consider Kincannon’s recommendation at their next regular meeting on Monday, July 15, at 6 p.m. in the Pittenger Fine Arts Center (400 North Wall Street, Belton, TX). If approved, Musil will begin serving in this new role in early August.
