Bond Exploration Committee Examines Belton ISD’s Needs as Fast Growth District
Belton ISD’s Bond Exploration Committee has gathered for two of seven planned meetings as they work toward creating prioritized project recommendations to present to Superintendent Dr. Matt Smith.
The group was commissioned in August by the board of trustees to review enrollment growth, facility needs and desired student experiences for the school district. Members have also had the chance to tour district schools and facilities.
“Some of the stark facts have been surprising,” said Audra McGregor, a parent of five Belton ISD students. “Nineteen campuses, 13,000-plus students and 7,000-plus plots that will be available to build on in the next few years. Almost half the campuses have facilities that are over 20 years old. Our district is huge and is projected to grow dramatically in the next five years.”
The first two meetings were spent reviewing the current state of the district. In the next three meetings — Oct. 13, Oct. 25 and Nov. 8 — the committee will start to examine needs identified from the district’s facilities assessment report completed in March 2021, the educational adequacy scores assigned for each campus and requests from campus and program administrators.
“In Belton ISD we believe that student learning experiences are enhanced through community engagement,” Smith said. “We’re partnering with community members in this process so that our community can help guide us through important decisions about our future facilities. The committee is doing an extraordinary job by asking thoughtful questions, participating in facility tours and focusing on the student experience.”
McGregor is looking forward to seeing how the committee can help remedy the aging facilities in the district and address the demands that come with growth.
“I hope that future funding is given to schools most in need,” she said. “I also hope there is a way for all students to maintain an identity and to have opportunities in sports, extracurriculars, etc.”
