Lake Belton High School Theatre will present Little Shop of Horrors at 7 p.m. Jan. 12-14. in the school’s Performing Arts Center.

It’s the school’s first musical production since opening in 2020.

Little Shop of Horrors, loosely based on the low-budget 1960s comedy of the same name, is a horror comedy rock musical that follows a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh.  

“The cast is really good,” Kyle Trehern, a senior at LBHS and the show’s assistant technical director, said. “The musical itself is something everyone can enjoy. It’s a comedy. It’s a horror. It’s a drama. It’s got all sorts of music — mostly rock, but some jazz and swing are in there also.”

Trehern didn’t want to give away too many surprises but said he hopes audiences enjoy how the crew portrays the plant and its on-stage evolution. 

“The spectacle of the plant is central to the show,” he said. “It’s satisfying to go through the design process. It changes as you’re building it, but that’s part of the fun. To see it fully built on stage during performances is awesome. That’s probably my biggest reason for doing this role — seeing it on stage. I love that.”

The two-hour show includes a cast of 23 and a crew of 25 students. 

Denise Larsen is LBHS’ director of theatre and Ty Carter is the technical director. They are joined in this musical production by Terrance Livingston and Charlotte Wurman, head choir director and assistant choir director at LBHS, respectively. Summer Koonce serves as the assistant theatre director.

Tickets are available at https://www.lbhstheatre.com/ and at the door. Online ticket prices are  $10 for adults and $7 for students. Purchased at the door, senior citizens age 60+ and those with a Belton ISD ID card can receive a discount. Tickets for children under 12 can be purchased at the door for $5.
