Meet Sarah Heeringa

Current title/school? First-grade teacher at Tarver Elementary

What inspires you to work in Belton ISD? One reason I chose to work in Belton ISD was because of their commitment to supporting student learning. I was so impressed with all of the opportunities available to students to engage in academic activities in so many varied subjects.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I love the outdoors. I really enjoy bike riding with my family and finding new places to camp. One of my favorite places to ride is the Hiawatha Trail in Montana. It's 17-miles with lots of old railway tunnels to bike through.

What was a pivotal moment in your career? It was conference time and I was teaching second grade. I was sharing with the dad of one of my students about an area of growth, which was using an open number line to add and subtract. He listened the entire time, nodding, and I thought it went well. At the end, he quietly pushed a paper toward me and just said, "Will you show me how, then I'll know how to help." I sat for the next 20 minutes teaching open number lines with a heart so humbled and full of love for my families. This moment has stuck with me all these years as a reminder of the power of partnering with parents and giving them the tools they need to support their student's growth.

Academics? Bachelor's of Education from Central Washington University and a master's degree from the University of Maryland Global Campus
